Ceramic Guide Surface Finishes
Ceramic guides help control yarn tension, friction and yarn quality. Selecting the right combination of material, guide profile and surface finish supports reliable running across different yarn types, speeds and tensions.
We offer a variety of surface finishes designed to optimise yarn handling and performance:

Matt Surface for Flat & De Twisted Yarns
Matt finish: 0.35 to 0.45 µm
Illustrated yarn diameter: 10 µm.

Polished Surface for Twisted Yarns
Mirror finish: 0.05 to 0.10 µm
Illustrated yarn diameter: 15 µm. Grain size diameter: 3 µm.
Technical Expertise
Our expertise extends beyond material supply. We understand how yarn interacts with ceramic surfaces under varying operating conditions and recommend a suitable guide type, profile and finish to reduce friction and yarn damage, improve yarn quality and extend component life.
OEM Compatibility
We supply ceramic guides compatible with a wide range of leading OEM equipment, including Aalidhra, Bhagat, Himson, Barmag, Rieter Scragg, Rieter ICBT, SSM, Guidici, RPR and TMT.
Material Comparison
Material selection complements the surface finish and guide profile. Compare Titania, two Alumina purity ranges and Zirconia below, then review their suitability for your application.
Titania (TiO₂) 96% Purity
- Cost
- Low
- Surface Finish
- Good
- Wear Resistance
- Moderate
- Friction Coefficient
- Medium
An economical option for simple yarn paths, low speed winding and guiding, particularly with non abrasive fibres, relatively low tension and less sensitive yarns.
Its moderate hardness and higher friction increase contact resistance and can lead to yarn heating and faster surface wear as speed rises. Fine filaments and delicate yarns may be more vulnerable to damage or loss of tensile properties, while wear can require shorter maintenance intervals.
Alumina (Al₂O₃) 95% Purity
- Cost
- Low to medium
- Surface Finish
- Very good
- Wear Resistance
- High
- Friction Coefficient
- Low
A dependable balance of wear resistance and yarn protection for general textile machinery, medium processing speeds and standard yarn types.
It supports stable yarn running with reduced friction and maintains surface quality during continuous operation. Typical applications include draw texturing and spinning preparation zones, flat yarn paths and low twist areas.
Alumina (Al₂O₃) 99.7% Purity
- Cost
- Medium
- Surface Finish
- Excellent, mirror polish
- Wear Resistance
- Very high
- Friction Coefficient
- Very low
High purity Alumina combines durability and yarn protection for high speed, quality critical processing, including draw texturing, twisted yarn zones and fine denier filament yarns.
With a suitable mirror polished finish, its smooth surface reduces abrasion and friction, helping maintain consistent tension, limit filament breakage and preserve yarn tensile properties.
Zirconia (ZrO₂)
- Cost
- High
- Surface Finish
- Excellent
- Wear Resistance
- Very high
- Friction Coefficient
- Very low
A premium option for abrasive fibres and high mechanical loads, including glass fibre, aramid and other technical yarns, as well as high tension winding and guiding.
Its resistance to chipping and cracking helps retain a smooth working surface under demanding conditions. It is typically selected where standard ceramics wear too quickly or fail under stress.

Supporting Yarn Quality and Reliable Production
Ceramic guide material, profile and surface finish influence yarn to guide friction, running tension and resistance to wear. Selecting a guide suited to the yarn and operating conditions can help limit abrasion and filament damage while maintaining consistent yarn running.
Wear resistant guides can provide longer service life and reduce replacement frequency. Fewer guide related yarn breaks may also reduce stoppages and support consistent production quality. Actual performance depends on yarn type, spin finish, speed, tension, contact angle and guide condition.
